Professional Equipment

In 2015, space was alloted to us by the AStA of Osnabrck University, in which we installed a professionally equipped sleep lab. Our professional polysomnographic equipment includes devices to record brain activity (6 channel EEG), eye movements (EOG, important e.g. for REM sleep scoring), facial muscle tonus (EMG) and leg movements, heart rate (ECG), a snoring microphone, an infrared camera, chest and abdomen straps, an orientation sensor, a thermistor for measuring nasal airflow and temperature, a pulse oximeter for measuring the blood oxygen level and heart rate, CPAP (not used by us so far, for treating sleep related breathing disorders) and more. This equipment was donated to us last summer. Due to legal reasons, we are not allowed to name the donator, a well known company producing sleep lab equipment. The donation was arranged by Prof. Dr. Young of University Clinic Mnster.

Besides this, Prof. Dr. Knig of the Neurobiopsychology group of the Institute of Cognitive Science at Osnabrck University has lent us a 10-20-EEG system for recording the brain's activity during sleep, which makes possible more advanced EEG analyses than it would be possible with the standard polysomnographic measures.

We are very grateful to our supporters, without whose donations and loans we could not conduct our professional sleep laboratory experiments (we only have a 990 Euro budget - per year!).

Besides the professional equipment in our sleep lab, our initiative additionally owns some sleep recording and sleep manipulation consumer products. Every member can borrow these items and test them at home. Join our meetings and see, which devices are free at the moment.

Zeo Bedside

The ZEO is a small EEG that is able to measure your sleep stages. It is very simple to operate, just put on the headband and sleep. The next morning the ZEO will display your distribution of REM, deep and light sleep.

The REM-Dreamer

The REM-Dreamer is a lucid dreaming induction device. It consist of a sleeping mask that is able to send light signals while you are dreaming. As the light signals are incorporated into the dream, you hopefully become lucid. The REM-Dreamer is programmable (to some extent) and is able to detect REM sleep.

The Remee

The Remee is also a lucid dreaming induction device. The Remee just starts sending light signals after a certain amount of pre-set time. It is sort of the light version of the REM-Dreamer, but therefore much easier to operate.

Library

We have a small, but growing library dedicated to the topics of sleep and dreaming. Here you can find a number of very good and recent books, but also "old classics" that deal with sleep and dreams. Topics range from general sleep over lucid dreaming to dream analysis. We also have a small, but growing collection of sleep and dream related papers. If you are new to the topic of sleep and dreams and want to learn more, reading one of the short introductory books is recommended.

We especially thank Prof. Dr. Schredl from ZI Mannheim and Prof. Dr. Dresler from Donders Institute for their extensive book donations! Moreover, we thank author Simon Rausch for the donation of his book "Oneironaut"!

By the way, the Osnabrck University library has a great collection of recent books about sleep and dreaming, too.
